I have always had a passion for physical fitness -- running several marathons, interstate bike races and other events. This obsession for self improvement contributed greatly to my success throughout my eight years as a Wildland Firefighter.
As some of you may already know, I have been training the last year for a bodybuilding show. I put in hours of work, months of dieting and calorie restriction, early mornings and massive amounts of willpower to make this happen. Training for this show was a true challenge that took sheer discipline, determination and grit.
As you might have guessed...
The show has been canceled.
Do I feel like all my work was for nothing? Absolutely not.
Here are some lessons I’ve learned along the way:
1. Obstacles are part of life.
As I’ve learned, there is always another hurdle to overcome. There's always a higher mountain or a bigger fish.
2. You are stronger than you think.
When you think you’ve hit a wall, you likely still have the strength to forge ahead.
3. Discipline is the key to get results.
Without consistency, you won't see the fruits of your labor.
4. Life is more rewarding when you’ve achieved the goal you set for yourself.
That is what creates motivation to keep moving toward bigger goals.
I quickly transitioned my efforts and focus to growing my business, making time for education and continued self-improvement. With a positive outlook, there are always opportunities. You just have to choose to acknowledge them.
